The movie Nicholas & Alexandra is a biographical film of the give-up the spook Tsar, set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution. Made in 1971 by Columbia Pictures, the camerawork is poor, and a clear sign of the times. The movie does oblige some historical inaccuracies, but as a whole, it is a trustworthy film to watch for an over-view of the Russian Revolution. Produced by a British company, and spoken in British-English, this is steady-going for Western viewers. During the 3 hour film (complete with intermission), it is sometimes difficult to distinguish novel characters. It is evident that the movie may not have had a large budget for effects, but as movies have unquestionable since the 70s it is hard to say. One thing that excelled in this movie, however, was the acting. A fabulous cast, who were able to take on the roles of the characters well. In the first half of the movie, the makers bring to life the isolated fairy-tale being the Imperial Family i nhabited. The beautiful palaces provide a contrast to the shabby, nettlesome prison quarters of the films second half, which deals largely with the Romanovs exile and irons in Siberia. Nicholas was not a bad man, but he didnt want to be Tsar. The audience can feel the unease growing as Nicholas and his family slowly withdraw into their own fix because of Alexis Haemophilia. Nicholas stand that God meant for me to rule causes him to rarely listen to the good advice of the people around him and not heed the warning that he not go to the front to take charge. Add to this the rumor of Alexandra being a German spy, Rasputins death, the loss of thousands of soldiers and the starving Russian people and Nicholas leaves the door wide open for Lenin and his eventual drive away to power. After he abdicates, he and his family are shuttled around until they completion up in the house where they are to be executed, The roving house of Special Purpose.
